Sand Dune Restoration Mapping

Coastal Resilience Planning is critical as we face more severe weather. We conducted drone LiDAR-derived terrain modeling for Sand Dune Restoration paired with a real-time orthomosaic. Both data sets used the same ground control targets for highly accurate georeferncing of +/- 1/10’th. We provide quality control reports from our post-processing software. Be mindful of who you hire, some inexperienced drone pilots provide poor data. We pride ourselves on being the best and most reliable in the Northeast.

Using LiDAR to Map Changing Coastal Sand Dunes

Coastal sand dunes play a vital role in protecting shorelines from erosion and storm surges. However, these natural barriers are increasingly under threat from severe weather events and long-term environmental changes. To better understand the dynamics of these shifting landscapes, our team at Active Intelligence conducted a high-resolution LiDAR mapping survey, providing critical data to support ongoing conservation and restoration efforts.
 

Why LiDAR for Sand Dune Mapping?

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology enables the capture of highly detailed topographic data with centimeter-level accuracy. By using a drone-mounted LiDAR system to survey the dunes, we generated precise 3D models that reveal subtle changes in elevation and erosion patterns—insights that are often difficult to obtain with traditional survey techniques.

The Impact of Recent Storms

Coastal regions across the country have experienced significant impacts from increasingly frequent and intense weather events. Early 2024 brought a series of powerful storms that caused extensive dune erosion and reshaped parts of the coastline. Our LiDAR data confirmed substantial sand loss in surveyed areas, with storm surges dramatically altering dune structures and threatening nearby infrastructure. This information is critical for local authorities and environmental organizations developing mitigation strategies such as dune reinforcement and sand replenishment.

Previous studies have documented long-term erosion trends and explored potential solutions, emphasizing the importance of continuous monitoring.
